- Wear your life vest. River depth varies;
- Keep your weight low in the boat at all times.
Standing may cause loss of balance and capsize, or a fall.
- Keep your footwear on to avoid injury;
- Stay sober and straight. No Alcohol and other drugs
prior to or during your trip. These substances impair judgement
and increase the risk of injury or drowning.
And Ohio State Law prohibits the operation of any watercraft while under
the influence.
- Firearms and fireworks are prohibited.
Canoeing Tips
- Know your destination;
Allow enough time for your trip
- Be prepared for the weather with raingear, a hat, a change of
clothes, sunscreen, etc.;
- Bring a change of clothes.
- No glass or styrofoam containers;
- Do Not Trespass
- Ask our staff for pointers if you haven't canoed before.
- Kids can paddle too! 10-year olds (and some 8 -9 year-olds) can
kayak on their own.
- Groups should bring a cell phone & First Aid Kit.
Canoeing With Children
- Kids love to canoe & kayak.
- Children must wear a PFD (life jacket) at all times. We have comfortable
PFD's of all sizes.
- Pick a trip that fits the attention span of your child(ren).
Older
kids (8 and up) can usually handle up to a 3-4 hour trip. They are
also able to paddle a kayak for short trips (up to about an hour).
Younger
kids will often get restless after about 1 hour unless you provide "special"
distractions such as snacks, games, or toys.
- Make sure kids in the middle have a paddle and a pad to sit on. Don't expect
kids younger than 8 to be much help as paddlers; paddling uses muscles that
they haven't developed yet. But they'll feel left out if they aren't outfitted
like the rest of the family.
- Fishing hooks, children, and adults in a canoe...something is going
to get hooked, and it's not likely to have gills.
- Stay positive
- Bring lots of sunscreen
- Wear a hat to keep the sun glare down.
- Bring lots of water or juice to drink. Kids get dehydrated easily
and soft drinks increase the number of times that you will need to pull
over.
- Bring snacks in ziplock baggies
