10-year olds (and some 8 -9 year-olds) can kayak on their own.
Children must wear a PFD (life jacket) at all times. We have comfortable PFD's of all sizes.
Pick a trip that fits the attention span of your child(ren). Older kids (8 and up) can usually handle up to a 3-4 hour trip. They are also able to paddle a kayak for short trips (up to about an hour).
Younger kids will often get restless after about 1 hour unless you provide "special" distractions such as snacks, games, or toys.
Make sure kids in the middle have a paddle and a pad to sit on. Don't expect kids younger than 8 to be much help as paddlers; paddling uses muscles that they haven't developed yet. But they'll feel left out if they aren't outfitted like the rest of the family.
Fishing hooks, children, and adults in a canoe...something is going to get hooked, and it's not likely to have gills.
Kids get dehydrated easily and soft drinks increase the number of times that you will need to pull over. Bring snacks in ziplock baggies
